These days, the Dallas Cowboys are once again very relevant. And the Dak Prescott, Tony Romo controversy is great for the NFL

Stop us if you’ve heard enough about the looming quarterback controversy with the Dallas Cowboys.

Too late.

On Friday, team owner/president/general manager Jerry Jones appeared on KRLD-FM and 105.3 The Fan’s G-Bag Nation broadcast (courtesy of Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News).

He was asked if rookie quarterback Dak Prescott would be the team’s starter going forward if his club knocked off the Green Bay Packers.

“I really don’t know that I would look at it that way,” said the Cowboys usual spokesman. “I look at it in two ways, how Dak is evolving, how it is evolving now, not necessarily in the future, but in the future, so all of those things come to play. But I would say that there is nothing simple about this.”

For some, it’s become pretty elementary. A team that won four games all of last season and was 1-11 without signal-caller Tony Romo is 4-1 this year with their backup quarterback.

The rookie has been solid in relief of the injured veteran passer, throwing four touchdown passes without an interception. He has also run for three scores as well. Prescott is completing 69 percent of his throws and has committed only one turnover in five outings.

Yes, the Cowboys feature the league’s top running attack (155.2 yards per game) and have the NFL’s rushing leader in rookie Ezekiel Elliott (546 yards). The fourth overall pick in April has run for 130 or more yards in each of his last three games and Dallas as a team has totaled 180-plus yards in those contests.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that the Cowboys wouldn’t be just as good or even better with Romo. Two years ago when the Cowboys finished 12-4 and won the NFC East, Romo threw 34 touchdown passes and only nine interceptions while DeMarco Murray was leading the league with 1,845 yards on the ground.

You would have to be a little naïve to think Dallas is winning just because of the play of their quarterback. That’s not to take anything away from the 2016 fourth-round pick. What Prescott has done in a short time has made the organization feel better about its future.

If and when Romo returns and if by chance he goes down again, head coach Jason Garrett now has a proven and stable insurance policy. Romo put up phenomenal numbers in 2014, but certainly didn’t carry the team.

The Cowboys are doing exactly what they want to, regardless of who the quarterback is. With wide receiver Dez Bryant healing, their passing attack would be limited no matter which player was pulling the trigger.

Still, talking about the Cowboys is one of football fans’ favorite past times. “America’s Team” always has this country’s attention, whether they’re winning or losing.

With Romo’s return on the horizon and Prescott exceeding expectations to date, there are no losers when it comes to this edition of the Cowboys. And that goes for the league as well.
