2017 NFL Rookie Projections: New York Jets safety Jamal Adams
By Zach Goodall
Jamal Adams was the No. 6 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, and in Part 6 of a 32-part series, a look at his projections as a rookie.
The sixth pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the team most project to be picking first overall in 2018, Jamal Adams actually has a chance to fly high with the New York Jets. Adams, the former Louisiana State standout and the second of three former Tigers to be drafted in the first round this year, steps into the Jets secondary as the sure-fire starter at safety.
Although it’s unknown if he will play strong or free with fellow rookie Marcus Maye in the mix as well, Adams certainly seems to be impressing his teammates already (per NJ.com):
"“You’re getting better every day,” veteran quarterback Josh McCown said to the 21-year-old safety. “Keep it up.”"

In his career at LSU, Adams recorded 209 tackles, including 18 for a loss and two sacks, five interceptions, 14 defended passes, and two forced fumbles. He has the instincts and football I.Q. to play a mix of coverages at both strong and free safety, as well as the prototypical size (6-0, 214 pounds, 33.375-inch arms) to be a successful defensive back in the NFL.
The Jets, both on defense and as a whole, are missing both stability and playmakers on their roster. Adams gives the Jets both stability and play-making ability at the safety position, and should help improve their interception count: A mere seven by the secondary in 2016.
Adams’ floor as a prospect was very, as like I stated before, he fits the mold of the prototype safety. Given that, he will likely be an impact player the second he takes the field in green and white.
It’s hard to make projection in terms of stats for defensive backs, as their tackle counts vary and interceptions/defended passes stem from different variables. So, without going overboard, I’m going to project Jamal Adams finished his rookie season with around 60 tackles, two interceptions and six defended passes.

The Jets desperately need an impact player on defense (and, well, everywhere), and Jamal Adams will give them just that going forward.
