Some fantasy football owners like to wait before drafting their starting quarterback. Who are the best quarterbacks to target with that approach in 2017?

Every year there seems to be at least one quarterback who is either drafted late or not drafted at all in fantasy football, but still finishes the year as a top-five quarterback. Last year it was Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. In 2015 it was Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles. In 2014, it was Seahawks Russell Wilson and Steelers Ben Roethlisberger.

Who are some quarterbacks who are being drafted late this year who could finish as a top-five quarterback?

Here are five quarterbacks owners need to target who have an average draft position (ADP) of the 10th-round or later in 10-team leagues (according to Fantasy Football Calculator):

5. Jameis Winston, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Fantasy Football Calculator ADP: 10.04

I may not be as high on Jameis Winston as others but I still like him going into 2017. In each of his first two seasons in the NFL he has thrown 4,000+ yards and 22+ touchdowns. In 2015 he was a top-13 fantasy quarterback and last year he was a top-16 fantasy quarterback. The reason so many (including myself) expect Winston to take the next step in his third season is because he has more weapons than ever.

Last year the Buccaneers offense went through plenty of injuries. Vincent Jackson, Doug Martin, Charles Sims and Cecil Shorts all missed time with injuries. The team also released starting tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins due to off-the-field issues. Other than wide receiver Mike Evans, Winston was playing with a bunch of backups. This offseason the Buccaneers signed wide receiver DeSean Jackson in free agency and drafted tight end O.J. Howard, wide receiver Chris Godwin and running back Jeremy McNichols. All of these offseason additions will without a doubt help Winston and the offense.

The one reason I’m not 100 percent sold on Winston being a top-five fantasy quarterback is because he’s careless with the football. In 2015, he turned the ball over 17 times, and last year he turned it over 24 times. Hell, during his final year at Florida State in 2014 he threw 18 interceptions. Until Winston proves he can be better with the football, there are a few other quarterbacks I’ll be targeting before Winston late in drafts.
