When it comes to continuity and sports, it’s hard to top the Pittsburgh Steelers and their head coaching legacy spanning nearly five decades.
It’s been well documented but it’s certainly worth repeating. Since 1969, the Pittsburgh Steelers have had a total of three head coaches. It began with Hall of Famer Chuck Noll. He took the team to four Super Bowls in six years in the 1970s and won four titles.
In 1992, Bill Cowher took over and led the franchise to the playoffs in each of his first six seasons. The Black and Gold went to the Big Game twice more, losing in 1995 (XXX) and winning in 2005 (XL).
Then in 2007, Mike Tomlin succeeded Cowher. The team has not had a losing season under the 45-year-old head coach. He owns a 103-57 regular-season record. He won a Super Bowl in 2008 and went to another two years later. Hence, it was no surprise that the team’s current sideline boss got another contract extension.

Steelers president Art Rooney II had this to say, per Steelers.com:
"“I am pleased to announce we have extended Mike Tomlin’s contract through the 2020 season,” said Steelers President Art Rooney II. “Mike continues to prove he is one of the top head coaches in the National Football League. We appreciate the leadership that Mike has provided over the last 10 seasons, and we are confident and excited to have him continue to lead our team as we focus on winning another championship.”"
An appreciative Tomlin stressed the team’s goals as well:
"My first 10 years in Pittsburgh have been an amazing experience for me and my family. I’m proud to call Pittsburgh home. My focus is on the upcoming season, and our goals remain the same as they always are – to bring a seventh Super Bowl championship back to our city."

The Steelers have reached the playoffs three-straight years and seven times under Mike Tomlin. The Super Bowl has eluded them since 2010. For now, he continues to push the right buttons when it comes to the majority of the league. However, the New England Patriots continue to haunt the coach. Of course, he just got a little extra time to figure out that all-time great tandem of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.
