The Dolphins have opted to sign Jay Cutler as their 2017 starting quarterback. This is why they made the right decision.

There are many fans upset that the Miami Dolphins didn’t sign the polarizing Colin Kaepernick. Some are upset because they are Dolphins fans and believe he was the best option, while others support Kaepernick and everything he stands for and want to see him get a shot with an NFL team.

Then there are also fans who just wanted to roll with Matt Moore. Nevertheless, Cutler just made too much sense for Miami to pass on.

The most obvious reason is the connection between Cutler and head coach Adam Gase. Yes, Cutler did have his best NFL season in Gase’s system while the duo were together in Chicago, but more important is the fact that he was simply in the system.

More from Miami Dolphins

With about a month until the start of the regular season, it was imperative the Dolphins brought in a quarterback familiar with the system. Even if you believe Kap is a better football player, it’s a lot to ask him to step in and learn a complex system in a month and be the team’s Week 1 starter.

Despite the perception that Cutler is a dislikable loser, he did find success with Gase running the show. In 2015, he was efficient, effective and most importantly limited his trademark turnovers. His 11 interceptions were a career best on a per-game basis and he still was able to post solid passing numbers totaling 3,659 yards and 21 touchdowns while completing 64.4 percent of his throws.

This was a decision based on familiarity and proven history. Even if you believe in Ryan Tannehill, let’s not pretend this a sure-fire massive dro off. I’m a fan of Tannehill and believe in his potential, but I’ve been believing in that potential for years now and he hasn’t proven to be a world-beater.

If Gase believes Cutler is the best man for the job, he is far more qualified than anyone else to make that call.
