Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Blake Sims cut a sign of strength at running back
Once a star quarterback at Alabama, now-running back Blake Sims has been waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a sign of strength at the position.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers waived running back Blake Sims on Monday, just five days before the NFL’s 53-man regular season roster limit deadline. The move was first announced on the Buccaneers official website.
A former quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide, Sims best season at the position for the Tide came in 2014, his senior year. During that time, he passed for 3,487 yards, 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
After going undrafted, he bounced around from team to team, finally finding a home in the in 2016 on the Atlanta Falcons practice squad. Spending 10 days in the Falcons practice squad in December, he was released by the team and picked up by Tampa Bay in December.

Sims received limited opportunities over the course of the preseason, carrying the ball once for three yards.
With Tampa Bay’s running back position being full as it is, this release comes as no surprise. There is no doubt he has talent, but the Bucs are full at the position. It is partly the same problem that Jeremy McNichols is having. There are too many running backs on the team that have talent and are familiar with the system. The latter is more important in a situation like this.
This is a move that could partly resurrect Sims’ career in the long run. Maybe, he will find a home with another team and get the opportunity to play quarterback or find success at the running back position and in turn be placed higher on a depth chart.

Maybe this is the end of the rope for him, however at the age of 25, he is entering the prime of his career. You would have to think that there would be other opportunities for him out there. Whatever the case may be, he will now have to try and find work with another team.
