The Washington Redskins faced the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, in Week 4 of the 2017 NFL season. Here are highlights from the game.

The Washington Redskins met the Kansas City Chiefs in one of the more exciting matchups of Week 4 in the NFL. The Redskins (2-1) traveled to a place they’ve never won. The Chiefs (3-0), meanwhile, looked to stay undefeated behind a high-powered offense and an improving defense.

Coming off of how well they played last week, Washington looked like they hadn’t missed a beat to start the game. Kirk Cousins looked in form as they started with the ball and found free-agent addition Terrelle Pryor with a 44-yard dime down the right side. That gave them a 7-0 lead, which they held after stopping KC’s first drive and added to with a field goal when they got the ball back.

The bulk of the first half then became a punt fest, with the two teams trading a pair of the possession changes over the next four drives. Alex Smith, however, had seen enough of that to this point. He took the Chiefs 73 yards on seven plays before delivering a strike to his reliable tight end, Travis Kelce. When the Kansas City defense came up with a nice stop, Smith and the offense started to drive again. However, rookie kicker (also making his debut) Harrison Butker, missed the kick to essentially end the half.

As we see so often, though, the Chiefs got the ball to start the second half and again marched down the field. nine plays to get deep into Washington territory before Smith kept it himself and poked through the Redskins defense for six points and the 14-10 lead.

Washington wouldn’t be denied, though, as they responded in a big way. A monster play from veteran tight end Vernon Davis broke things open before Cousins then found Ryan Grant for the score and to take back the lead. The Chiefs clapped back, however, scoring a field goal on the ensuing 13-play drive, getting a stop, and then retaking the lead with another field goal on a 14-play trip.

Despite the Chiefs getting the score to 20-17, the KC defense looked like they may let them down. However, they muscled up and stifled Cousins and the Redskins offense. They forced a field goal to tie things up with 47 seconds left. However, Kansas City had that time and two timeouts to try and march down the field.

With the ball in hand, the home team tried to get something going initially, but weren’t getting big yardage on a few early tries. That’s when Smith kept a play alive by rolling out of the pocket and then dropped a feather into Albert Wilson’s arms for a monster gain. The offense was stifled from there, but it gave the Chiefs rookie kicker the chance to make a big play for his career. Butker came through, eliminating his early miss from his mind, with the go-ahead make.

There were four seconds on the clock following that, but that only allowed Washington to mess up their attempts at laterals and for Justin Houston to pick up a loose ball and return it for a score. The Chiefs late drive was masterful to stay perfect and move to 4-0. With that said, the Redskins proved that they are going to push most any team in this league.

With how the Redskins looked in Week 3, they had to feel that they had a chance at an upset. Having said that, the Chiefs hadn’t exactly looked like a team intent on losing.
