The New York Giants decided to extend the suspension of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie on Friday after several meetings with head coach Ben McAdoo.

It has been a rough week, to say the least, for New York Giants cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. He left a recovery session last Friday and was taken off the field during the Giants’ game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, a decision he reacted to by throwing his helmet in anger. Since then, there has been a fast-moving chain of events.

He first met with Giants head coach Ben McAdoo on Tuesday, per Jordan Raanan of ESPN, and was told during the meeting that he would be inactive for the team’s game against the Denver Broncos. In addition, he was told he would be fined for leaving the team facility on Friday.

The veteran walked out of the Giants facility on Wednesday and was suspended for his actions. Following another meeting with McAdoo on Thursday, it was announced that he was suspended indefinitely for his conduct. Rodgers-Cromartie can only be suspended four weeks due to conduct harmful to the team. This is in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Perhaps one piece of information to keep an eye on here is that the corner has one year remaining on his five-year contract, which he signed for $35 million back in 2014. So far this season, he has tallied 26 combined tackles, 10 assisted, and a half-sack.

Normally losing a player due to suspension is a sizable loss. However, if there is a position where the Giants possess ample depth, it is at corner. Currently, Eli Apple is slated as the top corner at the left spot while Janoris Jenkins is slated to hold it down at the right spot. While it is always nice to have all players available at your disposal, a loss of this type should not make too much of a difference when gameplanning.

As a unit, the New York corners have been in the middle of the pack performance-wise. They rank No. 19 in the league in pass defense with 222 yards allowed per contest. On the season, they have allowed 1,124 yards on the season. Looking at the bigger picture, those are not terrible statistics, but there is certainly room for improvement.

With the season not going as the Giants had hoped to this point, this is a distraction that was not needed. Hopefully, the team will be able to focus on righting the ship as they look to save their season. But giving everything else going on with Big Blue, it’s hard to even remember the Rodgers-Cromartie suspension in the grand scheme.
