2. Chargers couldn’t overcome self-inflicted wounds

Unfortunately for this 2017 Chargers football team, self-inflicted wounds have been their achilles-heel. Whether it’s been turnovers, missed field goals or special-teams woes — Los Angeles just hasn’t been able to overcome those during games. Not to mention, they found a new way to give away points on Sunday.

More from NFL Spin Zone

Los Angeles and New England were tied early in the second-quarter, when the Patriots punted the football to the Chargers. Travis Benjamin decided to try and field the football at the 11-yard line, but muffed the punt and tried retreating back across the field to out-rune the Patriots’ coverage.

Consequently, Benjamin lost 11 yards and was eventually tackled in the end zone for a safety. Not only did that give the Patriots a 9-7 lead, but the Pats got the football back and kicked a field goal. What was once a 7-7 football game, turned into a 12-7 lead for New England.

Needless to say, these kinds of mistakes are constantly costing the Chargers football games each and every weekend. However, luckily for them, this is the first any major mistakes have cost them a victory in a little over three weeks.
