2. Expect even more erratic quarterback play

Josh McCown has had times of brilliance, and times of “what the heck are you doing” this season. He’s had terrible turnovers and brilliant throws that may make some people say wow. With Bryce Petty at the helm, expect even more inconsistency.

Petty’s inconsistency will stem from being young and inexperienced. He may be in his third NFL season, but he’s on his second offensive coordinator, and the West Coast Offense isn’t something he’s familiar with. During the regular season, backup quarterbacks don’t see the practice field a lot. So, Petty will lack the rapport McCown had with the receivers. The offensive linemen are also used to a different voice, and that will take time to get used to.

Take what you want to from these final four games (if the Jets decide to start Petty for all of them). It may be that he’s not going to be more than a backup quarterback in the NFL, or it may be just a chemistry issue. In today’s NFL climate, it takes team a lot more time than it used to, because of the limited practice schedule, just see the slow start from the Patriots. Expect inconsistency, though, and probably a lot of it.
