3. Use his legs

With the offensive line as bad as it is, Petty will be outside the pocket a lot. He may also have to run, because they won’t give him enough time, unfortunately. There’s no one in the scouting community that would classify Petty as a burner. He definitely doesn’t have the speed of say a Lamar Jackson, but he has enough functional NFL mobility to use his legs to escape the pocket, and run when he needs to.

In his junior and senior seasons in Waco, TX, he did run for 20 touchdowns. He didn’t have a lot of yards per carry in college, but you must factor in the sacks, because a sack is negative rushing yards in college. He did do well at escaping pressure in college.

Petty is also capable of showing his mobility within the pocket. He can’t get happy feet looking to move before it’s necessary. He also needs to step up in the pocket and take the hits before throwing downfield.

Petty is a smart quarterback. He just needs to take the lessons he’s learned through camp, preseason, and the first 13 games and apply them to real game situations. Time will tell if he’s ready. Unfortunately for him, it’s a small window.
