New Orleans Saints: Drew Brees should be signed for two more years
Before Drew Brees hits free agency, the New Orleans Saints need to lock him down in a two-year contract and keep the quarterback until he hangs it up.
Throughout his time with the New Orleans Saints, Drew Brees has been spectacular and took the franchise in a completely new direction. Brees has been incredibly consistent and a huge part of why the Saints are known as one of the best offense. It’s time the Saints show him how much they appreciate his hard work and restructure his contract, adding two more years.
Back in 2016, the Saints signed Brees to an extension. While the deal ultimately saved the Saints money, it wasn’t great for Brees. In the contract, the team only had to keep Brees for two years and with those two years up, it’s hard to place what’s going to happen next.
Both the Saints and Brees have spoken about keeping him in New Orleans. Why would either want to break up a good thing? Keeping Brees under contract would solve their woes especially if they sign him for two years.
For Brees, it shows the team has trust in him and gives him some security. Basically, he’ll be able to hopefully play until the end of his career. Even if he only wants to play another year or so, it gives Brees some options.

Ultimately, it will be up to Brees when he decides to retire. As a lot of players have said before, he’ll just know. Until then, there’s a lot of ways the Saints can take advantage of his contract situation and sway it in their favor.
Signing Brees for two years gives them the option to either release him when necessary or trade him when the time comes. The main reason why a two-year Brees contract is helpful will be developing a new quarterback.
The Saints haven’t been able to find a solid backup quarterback for Brees and 2018 is time for them to start looking. They need to draft a third or fourth round quarterback who will have a Farve-Rodgers type relationship. Brees would be a great mentor and could help develop their next franchise quarterback.
Taking Brees age into account, it’s hard to imagine him playing pass 41 or 42. Much like those come before him, it’s a slow decline but it will eventually happen. Giving him the chance to win another Superbowl ring was supposed to come this year, but never did.

Regardless, another two years under Brees will likely produce a Super Bowl. Here’s hoping Mickey Loomis and Brees can come to the same conclusion. Since the team can’t use the franchise tag on him, getting this contract done soon will save an even bigger headache.
