Oakland Raiders: Top 2015 draft picks under a critical lens
Amari Cooper
Like edge-rusher Khalil Mack, the front office will likely exercise the fifth-year option on Cooper’s rookie deal. With uncertainty surrounding wide receiver Michael Crabtree‘s future with the team, the Alabama product has at least one more season in Oakland as a featured asset.
After back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns, it would seem silly to question whether Cooper remains with the team on a second deal. After another season marred by drops and injuries, the 23-year old’s stock has dropped, but it’s way too early to bail on the dynamic playmaker.
The Raiders entire offense took a step back. Nonetheless, the overall regression doesn’t excuse Cooper, and it’s fair to wonder how he’ll perform in the upcoming term. Under former offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, the 2015 No. 4 overall pick looked well on his way to becoming a premier pass-catcher in the league.
Gruden can’t catch the ball for Cooper, but he can create more opportunities for the young playmaker and hope that he’s put a disappointing year behind him. Wide receivers coach Edgar Bennett will also work to cut down on his focus drops.
For those who grew frustrated with Cooper’s play during a nightmare season, hang tight, there’s room for improvement. Fortunately, we already know what the fourth-year wideout can do when he’s at his best. Expect a bounce-back season for No. 89.
