2. Baker Mayfield

In the NFL Draft, especially in the first round, many teams are looking for reasons to not take you rather than the ones to take you. Mayfield has given teams enough of a reason to not take him.

The first was the video that you can see above. He was charged with public intoxication, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and fleeing as a result of that incident. That’s enough for teams to be scared away, because that’s unbecoming of the starting quarterback. However, when you combine it with the incident in Lawrence, KS, and the recent incident of blowing off a Bears interview, then teams are completely justified in being leery.

Each of those incidents in of themselves could just be laughed off as a young guy being immature, and maybe he’ll outgrow the behavior to become a great NFL quarterback. There’s one problem. When you string them all together in a matter of less than one year, it’s more than just immaturity, it’s a pattern of behavior.

For Mayfield, this pattern is not what you want in a franchise quarterback. While it’s not to the level of Johnny Manziel, it’s enough to justify not drafting him, especially in the first round. Say what you will about the behavior, but Mayfield isn’t a franchise quarterback.
