Chicago Bears: 5 Cornerbacks to target in 2018 NFL Free Agency
Patrick Robinson (2017: 45 Tackles, 4 Interceptions, 18 Passes Defended)
I expect the Bears to re-sign Amukamara. If they don’t, however, they need a dependable veteran to help in the locker room and on the field. Having Super Bowl champion Patrick Robinson in the fold certainly helps.
Even though Robinson is 30 years old, he had possibly his best season, tying his career-highs in interceptions and passes defended. He also played in all 19 games the Philadelphia Eagles had and had an interception in the NFC Championship Game that helped his team get to the Super Bowl.
The Eagles want to re-sign Robinson but they are in a salary cap pinch. At the moment, they are actually over the cap. The announcement of a new salary cap gives them some money, but if they want to keep Robinson they need to jump through hoops to free up space. There are teams out there, including the Bears, who have some space to sign him. The Eagles cannot afford to keep him if other teams look at him. He made just the league minimum in 2017 so don’t expect a hometown discount. This is his last contract.
Robinson plays primarily in the slot (he was among the top slot corners in the league) he could also play on the outside for a bit. That adds versatility, something defensive coordinator Vic Fangio covets in a player.
