Without a deal and almost a free agent, it’s not hard to imagine a world where Drew Brees is no longer part of the New Orleans Saints.

Surprisingly, the New Orleans Saints have yet to reach a deal with Drew Brees. Although many fans remain hopeful, it’s down to crunch time. Brees has yet to hit the free agent market, but is probably getting a flurry of offers. Is it possible that Brees won’t be a Saint this upcoming season?

The simple answer to the question is yes. It’s extremely possible Brees won’t be with the Saints for a multitude of reasons. The main reason is Brees not giving the team a hometown discount and both sides make a fair case. For Brees, he’s still playing at a high level and deserves to be paid as such.

For the Saints though, they know Brees and are probably already counting down the days until his retirement. At age 39, it’s not hard to imagine and giving him, a big contract will only further complicate things.

The other issue is how the team will deal with his loss if he does go somewhere else. After all the success and momentum from last season, Brees is a necessity. Yes, Alvin Kamara was amazing last season but he wouldn’t fit on every team. Brees was part of the reason why he was such a huge success.

If the Saints try to draft a young quarterback, it’s not only going to halt all the progress Brees has made with his teammates but start an entirely new era. That’s not always a bad thing, but the team needs to focus on bigger needs right now. They should be looking at picking a QB in the later rounds to sit behind Brees.

Coming up with a deal for those reasons above will be hard enough, but let’s not forget about the biggest elephant in the room. There are a lot of teams who want Drew Brees and who would love to a have a quarterback as talented as him. Just look at how many teams are looking to sign Kirk Cousins.

While I can’t imagine the Saints without Brees, the harsh reality is we might have to. Brees is a hot commodity and the Saints have dropped the ball for now. Hopefully, the two can work out a deal soon enough. If not, then it’s all about finding someone who can replace Brees and lead the team. If anything, this shakes up the NFC South picture even more!
