4. Cornerback

The 49ers have their starting corners locked in now after signing Sherman to a three-year contract reportedly worth $39 million. Sherman will likely start across from Ahkello Witherspoon after the latter enjoyed a very promising rookie campaign, with K’Waun Williams set to remain in the slot corner role.

But, with Sherman coming off Achilles surgery and defenses spending so much time in nickel and dime sets, it is not enough for the Niners to have just three starting calibre corners.

Sherman is an excellent marquee addition for San Francisco but, for the 49ers to be sure of long-term success in the secondary, they need to be four players deep at corner and adding extra help at the position through the draft is highly advised.

3. Linebacker

San Francisco’s defense improved down the stretch but has already been dealt a blow going into 2018 with Reuben Foster facing a suspension after two arrests. Foster’s likely absence leaves the 49ers’ options at linebacker looking thin.

Malcolm Smith provides a veteran presence but has had problems in coverage, while Eli Harold has rarely caught the eye in his three seasons with the team. Brock Coyle performed adequately when pressed into service but, should he be re-signed, remains best suited as a backup who brings special teams value.

Foster’s athleticism and ability to make plays near the line of scrimmage were extremely valuable last season and, with the Niners set to be without him for at least some of 2018, the void will need to be filled.
