New York Jets: Grading early 2018 free agent signings
Isaiah Crowell, RB
The Jets had to get younger at the running back position and the 25-year old halfback should fit the bill. He signed a three-year contract, but financial terms were not disclosed. Crowell spent his first four seasons for the hapless Browns so the change of scenery should do him a world of good.
The Alabama State product is not going to remind anyone of Le’Veon Bell but he provides a nice upgrade over the now retired Matt Forte. Crowell averaged 4.2 yards per carry on 737 career rushes for the Browns and tallied 853 yards on the ground in 2017. He provides excellent ball security — something all coaches love — with just one fumble last season and six for his career.
Crowell will be New York’s primary back and should blend in well with 29-year old Bilal Powell and second-year halfback Elijah McGuire. Both Powell and McGuire are solid change-of-pace backs but Crowell has pass receiving skills as well (68 catches the last two seasons).
The 5-11, 190-pounder will be the goal line back as well but Powell might see a carry or two in those situations. Crowell is very strong at the point of attack and is known for being one of the better halfbacks in the NFL in gaining yardage after contact (YAC). Youth is always served at the running back position and Crowell should thrive in his new home.
