In this draft, other than Bradley Chubb (who went sixth overall) the run on edge rushers doesn’t come until late in the first. It carries over to the second round. There, Marcus Davenport becomes available.

The theme to the Chicago Bears’ offseason is athleticism and flexibility. It continues with Davenport. He played three sports (football, basketball, and track). Additionally, he can play with his hands down or up, allowing defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to move him around if needed.

As with Edmunds, Davenport can still fill his frame with more weight. As he continues to get bigger and improve his play, no tight end will handle him. He already has very good lateral movement and pretty good hand movement to handle tackles.

Davenport is still a little raw. Some teams may take a pass on him, but Fangio puts his defenders in a position to succeed so Davenport should learn a great deal and do it quickly.

Another concern is that he played with Texas-San Antonio. That school is not part of the usual big-time schools so many of their players get overlooked. You can look at the best defensive player in the league, Khalil Mack, as just one example of successful NFL players in the NFL. Davenport showed he can be one of those players by having a good week at the Senior Bowl and at the NFL Combine. He can more than hold his own.
