Lost in the terrible season that was 2017 for the Giants was the play of Aldrick Rosas, their kicker. He was terrible all around, and we can cut him a little slack, because he was a rookie, but that doesn’t excuse being near the bottom in every major statistical category as a place kicker and on kickoffs.

He was 34th in the NFL with a field goal percentage of 72 percent, and on kickoffs he wasn’t much better. HIs 41.9 percent touchback rate on kickoffs was 30th in the NFL. Both were out of 40 qualifying kickers.

Daniel Carlson had a little bit of a down year in 2017, but his career overall shows he can kick in the NFL. He had a road field goal percentage of 89.7 percent while at Auburn, and that shows the road crowd can’t rattle him.

In terms of overall numbers, in four years at Auburn he had a 70.2 percent touchback rate on kickoffs and made 80.7 percent of all of his field goals (missing only six out of 64 field goals under 40 yards). Rosas wasn’t good enough to be guaranteed a spot on the 2018 roster, and Carlson would be the kicker the Giants need moving forward.
