New York Jets: Mike Maccganan trying to reverse the quarterback curse
With the third pick in the NFL Draft the New York Jets select: a quarterback to be named later — most likely.
New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles referred to the NFL Draft as an “educated crapshoot,” and nothing is more evident than that of the Jets draft history with the quarterback position. As Rich Cimini mentioned in his piece for ESPN Now, the Jets have drafted 11 quarterbacks since 2000 — more than the Cleveland Browns — and none have turned out to be the franchise guy.
If you want to look at the snapshot of quarterbacks selected in the top 10 for the Jets: one never played a down for the Jets, and the other three combined to go to four AFL/AFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl. If you look at the picture as a whole, the Jets have a success rate of 2.6 percent (one out of 39), if you judge a success rate on championships.
There are four quarterbacks on the radar for the Jets: Sam Darnold (the presumptive No. 1 overall pick), Josh Rosen, Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield. Given their history in the draft, Jets fans are apprehensive, and it’s easy to see why.
For general manager Mike Maccagnan, there’s one way to change the mindset of the fans. He must win one Super Bowl with a quarterback he drafts. It’s rare for a quarterback to be a free agent and lead another team to a Super Bowl title.
Kurt Warner was an undrafted free agent signed by the Rams after leading the Iowa Barnstormers to consecutive Arena Bowl Appearances. Nick Foles was signed as a free agent by the Eagles during last offseason (albeit drafted by the Eagles originally), and Peyton Manning are ones in recent vintage to do so.

Jets fans have longed for their team to be playing in the Super Bowl, let alone be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. With one draft pick, Maccagnan could be the hero of Jets fans forever.
