People constantly reference the sack total of Muhammad Wilkerson when it comes to reasons why he is no longer with Gang Green. That is one reason, but his bad attitude and lack of effort are others. That said, his poor sack totals were a result of scheme more than ability.

More from NFL Spin Zone

After his 12-sack season, fans expectations became unreasonably high for Wilkerson, because, technically, in the Jets system edge rushers are the ones that are meant to get the sacks, not the interior linemen. So, when looking at the sack totals, it’s the edge rushers that should be disappointing more than the defensive front.

After getting their quarterback, the Jets should shift their focus to getting after the opposing quarterback. When it comes to edge players Dorance Armstrong should be targeted by the Jets, and you should use 2016 as your guide, because Kansas had him play a different role, which he was also good at.

According to Pro Football Focus, in 2016, he had 47 total pressures and a pass rush productivity of 11.6 (23rd in the nation). When Kansas switched his role to a primary run defender, Pro Football Focus gave his a run stop percentage of 10.6 percent, which was tied for sixth in the nation. This shows he’s not a liability on any down. He’s the guy the Jets need to set the edge against the run, and get after the quarterback.
