New York Jets: Is Baker Mayfield a better scheme fit than Josh Rosen?
With Josh Rosen being less mobile, Baker Mayfield may be a better quarterback for the West Coast Offense of the New York Jets.
Michael Vick, Deshaun Watson, Cam Newton, and Lamar Jackson are just some of the names we thing of when it comes to mobile quarterbacks. That’s mostly due to them running with the football. However, for the New York Jets, they need a different type of mobility, one who can use bootleg action and throw on the run.
Rosen is the least mobile of the top quarterbacks in the draft. He’s not quite Peyton Manning in the pocket, but somewhere between Manning and Tom Brady in terms of mobility. That’s not great.
Mayfield, while not a runner, per say, is mobile. He can roll out, and hit his man downfield, and he may have to do that to be successful in this league, given his size. According to Pro Football Focus, he’s cool under pressure too, with a career passer rating under pressure of 116.1.
Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus wrote this in the same article, “This past season, Mayfield had the eighth-most “NFL throw” attempts in the nation and by far the best grade of any college quarterback on those pass attempts.” So, he can make the throws necessary to win in the NFL.
Mayfield has some things he needs to work on. That said, from a mobility standpoint, he seems to be a better fit for the West Coast offense than Rosen. He is also very accurate. So, the Jets should at least consider Mayfield over Rosen.

In the end, for the Jets, it a matter of how much of the playbook would be eliminated with a not-so-mobile quarterback. If they feel that Mayfield gives them more options, then Mayfield is the guy. If not, it’s truly a toss-up. Mayfield might just turn out to be the better choice, in the long-run.
