New York Jets: 3 Tight end targets in 2018 NFL Draft
2. Mark Andrews, Oklahoma
The Scottsdale, AZ native was Baker Mayfield’s favorite target for the Sooners last season. Andrews grabbed 62 receptions for 958 yards and eight touchdowns and averaged 15.5 yards per catch. He was named the winner of the John Mackey Award and earned first-team All-American honors.
The 6-5, 250-pounder has excellent size and length for a tight end and projects as a strong red zone target on the professional level. That’s just what the doctor ordered for Gang Green. Let’s take a look at some of Andrews’ highlights:
Andrews is not blessed with dynamic speed but he uses his strength and balance to find open holes in the seam, especially against zone coverage. He runs routes effectively and uses his NFL body to gain leverage at the apex of his route. Andrews is known for making the difficult catch in traffic and his athleticism helps make defenders miss an initial tackle. Quick burst is not his friend but he is crafty enough to find separation in tight spaces.
What holds Andrews back from being a sure-fire first round selection is his lack of breakaway speed and below-average blocking ability. He’s not going to help a team run the ball down an opponents throat. It appears on tape that he has no keen interest in blocking. That has to change moving forward.
With that being said, Andrews would make a fine replacement for Seferian-Jenkins. He would be a superb red zone target and his ceiling is higher than the former Jets tight end.
