4. Justin Reid, S (Stanford)

You will notice a theme here as the former Cardinal is the first of three defensive backs on this list. And ironically, he was the Houston Texans’ first selection in the 2018 NFL Draft. Of course, that didn’t come until round three as the franchise had dealt their first two picks the previous year – putting the club in position to rid themselves of Brock Osweiler and later, select quarterback Deshaun Watson with the 12th overall selection.

So what does Stanford University defensive back Justin Reid bring to Bill O’Brien’s club? The 6-1, 207-pound prospect earned All-American accolades in 2017, totaling 94 tackles, one sack, six passes defensed and five interceptions in 14 contests. And it’s hard not to excited about his potential if you listen to NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein:

"Reid is what teams are looking for at the safety position in 2018. He’s a plus size/speed prospect who has the athletic ability to help with man coverage and the instincts and ball skills for ball-hawking duties on the back end. Reid can get himself into some trouble when he’s overly aggressive, but his positive plays far outweigh the negative. He has the talent to become an early starter and a good one…"

The rookie defender joins a defensive backfield that is in the midst of a makeover. Reid will expand his craft behind incumbent free safety Andre Hal and newcomer Tryann Mathieu. And it will be interesting to see how quickly he is able to make an impact.
