Okay, this is going to sound strange. Ready? The Bears have plenty of options at wide receiver heading into training camp. I know, I know. That’s a ridiculous statement, right?

Well it feels that way considering the dumpster fire that was the Chicago receiving corps in 2017. However, after some serious restructuring this offseason, the group finally boasts some significant talent. An abundance of potential contributors, though, means at least a couple of notable names will be shown the door in the next few months.

One of those figures to be Bennie Fowler, a recent addition who came over from the Denver Broncos. While that’s not to say he isn’t capable of making a difference for the Bears’ passing game, I just don’t see him beating out some of the other options currently on the roster.

Allen Robinson and Taylor Gabriel obviously sit atop the depth chart. I’m guessing Anthony Miller will have earned the No. 3 role by the time training camp is in the books. From there, it’s anyone’s guess. Kevin White will again be given a chance to earn his keep. Josh Bellamy should stick, and Demarcus Ayers stands a good shot as well. I’m also predicting Javon Wims steals a roster spot.

That leaves no room for Fowler. Again, it’s not that he isn’t a competent NFL receiver — there’s just only so much space on one roster. It’s a tough blow to his career trajectory, but I feel like he’d be able to find work elsewhere eventually.
