New York Jets: Predicting the quarterback depth chart for 2018
2. Josh McCown
Josh McCown is expected to be the veteran mentor and teach the young Padawan the ropes of being an NFL quarterback. There’s are two questions, though. Why does he have to do it by playing? Can’t Sam Darnold take his lumps and McCown be like a second coach on the sidelines going over what he did wrong with him in that way?
The answer to both of those questions is yes. The Jets did sign McCown to $10 million contract that’s fully guaranteed. So, the only way to recoup any of that money would be to trade him and save $5 million, but that makes no sense.
At least with McCown as a backup — and an improved offensive line — there’s a chance he can win you some games if Darnold gets hurt or plays poorly. McCown is a team guy and will do what’s best for the Jets. So, him being the backup won’t destroy the team, either.
It’s an expensive way to do it, but the Jets essentially have two quarterback coaches and a backup quarterback with McCown on the sidelines. So, it’s a win-win for the Jets. They have a veteran with experience in this offense and can win games if needed and a guy who they know can aid the coaching staff with teaching a young quarterback.
