When you play the 3-4 defense you can never have enough linebackers. And this offseason, the Los Angeles Rams were busy dealing away two of their best players in this department. They sent converted defensive end/outside pass rusher Robert Quinn to the Miami Dolphins. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Rams’ general manager Les Snead dealt another former first-round pick, linebacker Alec Ogletree, to the New York Giants.

Remaining are Mark Barron, who finished second on the team in tackles this past season, and a slew of relatively-untested performers. That includes four rookies in the form of inside backer Micah Kiser (5-Virginia) and outside prospects Ogbonnia Okoronkwo (5b-Oklahoma), Travin Young (6d-Louisville) and Travin Howard (7-TCU). But it’s worth noting that Howard played both linebacker and safety with the Horned Frogs. Stay tuned as to where he will wind up in Wade Phillips’ defense.

Then there’s inside linebacker Ramik Wilson, who the Kansas City Chiefs opted not to pick up his fourth-year option. He joins the Rams and should push for the starting spot next to Barron. Keep in mind that while this defense made some strides in some areas a year ago, they still finished 28th in the league against the run. It’s something this club needed to address this offseason in a variety of ways. On paper, they appeared to put themselves in position to rectify the issue.
