Chicago Bears: Top 5 offseason additions, post 2018 NFL Draft
3. Trey Burton, TE (from Philadelphia Eagles)
Yes, it’s cliché time. As has been said too many times, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So it’s somewhat ironic that one of the most memorable plays in Super Bowl history now has a connection with the Chicago Bears in more ways than one.
Late in the first half of Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots, then-Philadelphia Eagles’ tight end Trey Burton would wind up throwing a touchdown pass to quarterback Nick Foles. As Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times documented back in February, the Bears first utilized that play in the very same building at Minnesota back in 2016.
So does that mean we can now see Burton connecting with new teammate Mitch Trubisky in the end zone some time in 2018? More importantly, what does the four-year professional bring to his new club? After being used sparingly as a pass-catcher his first two seasons in the league, the former University of Florida product became a bigger factor the past two years. In 30 regular-season games, he was targeted a combined 91 times and caught 60 passes for 575 yards and six scores — five of those touchdowns in 2017.
Teamed with Dion Sims and intriguing second-year pro Adam Shaheen, Burton has the potential to make this a much more productive area for the Bears this fall.
