After seeing his team cut volatile wide receiver Dez Bryant, Dak Prescott says the Dallas Cowboys will be fine and teams don’t really need a No. 1 receiver

It isn’t a popular opinion, but that doesn’t make it wrong. The Dallas Cowboys have been open for criticism this offseason for parting with wide receiver Dez Bryant.

While it’s not really debatable that Bryant wasn’t earning the $16 million he was set to count against the salary, there is questions about who will catch the ball in Dallas going forward. With Bryant now gone, the depth chart now has Allen Hurns, Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley, Michael Gallup, Deonte Thompson, Noah Brown and Cedrick Wilson, Jr.

Of those players, Hurns, Beasley and Williams are the most accomplished — although Williams has his status up in the air after a recent arrest. None of those guys however are considered a No. 1 wide out. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott doesn’t think that’s an issue.

Prescott recently said Dallas will be fine, and questioned if a team really needs that prototypical No. 1 guy outside.

"“I don’t know if any team in the league necessarily needs a No. 1 receiver,” Prescott said via Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. “It’s about getting the ball out, spreading the ball around, keeping the defense on its toes.”"

It’s the Cowboys, so that comment will be picked on quite a bit. But he’s absolutely right.

Not only is Prescott right, but some of the better teams in the league have already figured that out. The New England Patriots for one don’t have that typical guy outside and they’ve been fine. The Seattle Seahawks would also fall into that category.

Those teams make it work with a committee approach out wide and that’s exactly what Dallas plans to do. The only difference is Dallas has a running back that can carry the offense in Ezekiel Elliott — which will bring safeties up and make things easier for players like Hurns and company to succeed.

And for anyone thinking that’s impossible, they only need to look to the past to see how wrong that thinking is. Dallas was in a similar situation a decade ago when they cut Terrell Owens following the 2008 season. People scoffed then and asked what they would do. Some even made fun of owner Jerry Jones for saying Miles Austin could help fill the void after recording just 13 receptions the season before.

Austin answered the call and had 1,320 yards off 81 receptions with 11 touchdowns. No one admitted the Cowboys were right then, they just pretended it never happened. Expect the same if Prescott and the Boys are right again.
