Kenny Vaccaro roams centerfield

Free safeties in general have not had much of a market in free agency. Their loss could be the Cowboys gain. With Byron Jones taking his talents to cornerback. Maybe picking up a former Texas Longhorn to roam centerfield should be in the picture.

Kenny Vaccaro was drafted by the New Orleans Saints No. 15 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. He spend the past five seasons with the Saints. He played well enough as a free safety to have the Saints pick up his fifth year option.

Now he is a free agent after missing games to a PED suspension in 2016 and suffering a torn goin injury and wrist injury in 2017 . Both injuries required surgery which landed him on IR effectively ending his season. Recovery from these surgeries is key for his future.

While on the field his play has drawn mixed reviews. He has shown flashes of his potential while at other times playing erratic and making many defensive mistakes. He is a gamble on a future that will be productive. But signing Vaccaro on a one year contract to be a bridge player to the next free safety is not a bad move.

Should the Cowboys sign Vaccaro, he would join second year strong safety Xavier Woods. Also in the safety depth chart is Jeff Heath who could be a rising star but his skill set still needs some development. In all, adding Vaccaro would bring an established veteran presence to a very young Dallas secondary.

If Vaccaro come in and play well, he could help stabilize a young secondary and help them develop. He could also improve his own future and maybe land the Cowboys a compensatory pick for the 2020 NFL Draft. This would be the ideal scenario. At worst he fails to pan out and he is cut. Vaccaro is worth the chance.
