Chicago Bears: Kyle Long ready to get back to action
Chicago Bears offensive lineman Kyle Long spent the last couple of seasons dealing with injuries. He feels better now and wants to contribute to the positivity around Halas Hall.
The last couple of seasons were rough for Chicago Bears offensive lineman Kyle Long. He started out his career with three straight Pro Bowl seasons. In his last two seasons, however, he’s dealt with a number of injuries that kept him off the field.
After missing just one game in his first three seasons, Long missed 14 games in his next two. He’s had injuries to his labrum, ankle and neck.
Dealing with the injuries and going through all the losses over the past few seasons frustrated Long. He is an intense competitor and wants to be on the field. Also, with all the positive vibes spreading around Halas Hall, Long wants to contribute to more of it. He’s done everything he could to help the Bears, including moving from his natural guard position (where he made two Pro Bowl appearances) to tackle. Even though he didn’t even take reps at the position during camp, he ended up making the Pro Bowl at his new position as well.
Now Long’s ready to get back into the mix. The offensive line, while doing a fairly good job in his absence, seems completely different without him. With him on the line, things appear more settled.
In addition to his improved health, Long has a new offensive line coach. Harry Hiestand is making his second go around with the Bears. He developed some top-notch linemen during his first tenure between 2005-09. Additionally, he sent the NFL some great young linemen when he coached at Notre Dame.
Now, in his second go-around with the Bears, he has some good talent such as Long, Cody Whitehair and rookie James Daniels. As good as Long is, it’ll be interesting to see how much better he’ll be with Hiestand’s guidance.

Long is the undisputed leader of the line. He says what others won’t and he’ll take the heat for it. If he indeed stays healthy and plays a full season, look for the passing and running games to take a big step forward. Also, he’s probably tired of hearing all the Super Bowl stories of his father and brother at Thanksgiving dinner.
