5. DT Malik McDowell

I’m kicking this shindig off with Malik McDowell because the Seahawks reportedly plan on moving on from him (via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). The reason it still falls into the “surprise” category is because, just over one year ago, Seattle spent a second-round pick on the Michigan State alum.

Most of you already know the story behind this one: McDowell suffers a severe concussion stemming from an ATV accident, can’t seem to get back to full health, Seahawks grow weary, blah, blah, blah.  Then, in the midst of all of the mystery surrounding his absence, McDowell gets busted for disorderly conduct while down in Atlanta (via TMZ)

It’s a sad way to see things end for such an intriguing young defensive tackle, but it is what it is. Without bad luck, there wouldn’t be any luck at all.

I don’t blame the Seahawks for pulling the trigger on McDowell in the second round. Personally, I was rather fond of his potential as a disruptive three-technique with the athleticism and explosiveness to get after the quarterback. Unfortunately, no one could have foreseen the string of events that got us to where we are now.

Maybe a change of scenery (or medical team) is what McDowell needs to get his career back on track. Or maybe we’ll never see him play a single snap in the NFL. It’s anyone’s guess at this point.
