The usually quiet NFL Supplemental Draft has some intriguing names this year and the Dallas Cowboys should make a play for safety Brandon Bryant

Mississippi State safety Brandon Bryant has thrown his name into the 2018 NFL Supplemental Draft and the Dallas Cowboys should be paying attention. Currently the team is pretty thin at the spot, with only four guys on the roster boasting any actual experience at the position.

Veteran Jeff Heath is a presumed starter and by far the most experienced member of the team. He should be sharing the field with Xavier Woods and their best option on the bench is Kavon Frazier.

Marqueston Huff is the only other safety with playing experience, but he’s not even guaranteed to make the final roster.

His spot is likely to be taken by undrafted rookie Kameron Kelly, but the truth is Dallas needs talent at the spot. That’s why it would make sense for them to get into the action during the July 11 draft and place a bid on the Mississippi State product.

The way this draft works is simple, a team places a bid on a player and if they’re awarded him, they then sacrifice their pick the following draft that matches the round of their bid. So let’s say Dallas bids a fourth-rounder — and they become the team with the highest bid — then they loser their fourth-round pick in 2019.

Bryant, who entered the draft due to academic ineligibility, recently held a workout and 14 NFL teams were in attendance. Dallas wasn’t one of them, but it doesn’t mean they haven’t been watching from afar.

Of course this is a moot point if Dallas is still trying to land Earl Thomas, the Seattle safety who they have been tied to all offseason. That move instantly changes the look of their backfield.

However, if they know that the Thomas move isn’t happening, it may be wise to throw even more talent at the position. And Bryant has that.

Not known so much for his coverage skills, Bryant is a willing tackler who plays with a full head of steam. He would be an ideal strong safety who could be a long-term answer next to Woods, who has potential as the free safety answer.
