New Orleans Saints: What’s the deal with Brandon Coleman?
Since joining the New Orleans Saints, Brandon Coleman has been decent but not great. With a possible injury, what does his future look like in New Orleans?
The New Orleans Saints are on the path to greatness. Even since last season, the team has made strides and looks to make another playoff run. Despite their improvements, they also lost some of the key players too. One player still left on the team, though, is wide receiver Brandon Coleman.
Coleman has been with the Saints since 2014. He was one of a handful of undrafted free agents the Saints signed that year, the primary other being Willie Snead, who ended up with the Baltimore Ravens this offseason. With Coleman’s lack of play or general playmaking, what’s his future look like with the team?
As a member of the Saints, Coleman has yet to full breakout. He’s had a few moments, but nothing to really cement his role in the offense. In 2017, he did start to make a bit of an impact, especially against the New England Patriots in Week 2. With Snead gone, it looked like a sure thing.

Then the Saints signed Cameron Meredith and closed the door on that opportunity. For now, Coleman hasn’t participated in training camp due to an injury. While there isn’t much insight on it, it’s worrisome. Maybe Coleman will return next week or maybe not.
Looking back at last season, Coleman was a standout during training camp. It looked like he was going to have a larger role in the offense and he did. It was assumed the same would take place this year but with an injury, it’s impossible.
Even with the possibility of injury, there could be a quick recovery time. Everything will really depend on Coleman and the Saints’ timeline. Despite all the negativity, there’s a lot of excitement in having Coleman back on the team.
Most notably, Coleman is known for his run blocking and play as a blocker. With Mark Ingram out, that’s going to be especially important. Additionally, that frees up Coleman to catch more passes if the offense’s focus shifts. Even with Meredith and Thomas, there are still opportunities for Coleman.
Overall, signing Coleman to a one-year deal is a win-win for the Saints and him. It gives Coleman a chance to prove himself and doesn’t cost the Saints much. Even if he doesn’t, the team can cut him or trade him.
Right now, his future with the Saints is secure. Depending on his injury and his playing time, that might change. For now, Coleman is a risk worth taking. Hopefully, the reward outweighs the risk though.
