3. K Daniel Carlson

Realistically, Daniel Carlson’s roster spot wasn’t in too much jeopardy. Sure, he’s technically in a positional battle with Kai Forbath right now, but it’s always been his job to lose.

Well, based on his first real action with the Vikings, he has no plans of taking the L. In fact, after Saturday night’s effort against the Broncos, Minnesota fans everywhere are breathing a hesitant sigh of relief. Remember, Blair Walsh looked great at first, too.

Still, Carlson killed it against Denver. I know the Mile High City is a kicker’s best friend, but it wasn’t the thin air helping the rookie this weekend. He came out cool and collected, booting the ball with confidence that showed in every stride. Not only did he put both of his field-goal tries (39 and 57 yards) through the uprights, but he made all four of his extra-point attempts.

Also. Undrafted rookies most likely to make Vikings' roster. light

Most (myself included) were extremely skeptical when the Vikings spent a fifth-round pick on Carlson back in April. After his first game, though, I’m starting to understand why Rick Spielman rolled the dice. The kid has quite the leg, and is well versed in using it.

If he can emerge as a clutch kicker in 2018, Carlson will be well worth the price of admission. Sorry, Kai, but it’s looking like your time in the Twin Cities is up.
