Taco Charlton

When drafted out of the University of Michigan in the first round in 2017, it seemed that Taco Charlton was going to be a plug and play player. Yet, there was nowhere to plug him in to play. With the emergence of Lawrence and the solid play of Tryrone Crawford, Charlton was relegated to the role of backup from the very beginning.

But even when he did get into the action, it was clear that he was not quite ready for the “plug and play” label. He struggled at times against the run. His pass rushing technique looked promising but still needed refinement. Although he showed flashes at times, it was clear that Charlton would need a little more grooming before he would be ready to take over full time.

This camp has been a good one for Charlton. He is starting to come into his own as a pass rusher. One can see that he is beginning to understand the need for more pass rush maneuvers in his arsenal. He starting to develop counters to his first moves.

Although it has not all quite clicked into place yet, he is beginning to show the progress necessary for everything to fall into place. This is a promising and needed sign with Lawrence playing on the franchise tag.

Will he be as good as Lawrence? Only time will tell. But with quarterback Dak Prescott’s contract coming due, the Cowboys may not be able to pay him and Lawrence both. If that is the case, Charlton will probably be a fixture in the future.
