Randy Gregory

Randy Gregory was out of football last year. As Cowboys fans know, Gregory was a pass rush specialist coming out of the University of Nebraska. He was a first round talent. His best asset was his ability to bend the corner against offensive tackles and get hits on the quarterback. But multiple substance of abuse violations have taken his once promising career and turned it into a long shot.

The Cowboys took a chance on Gregory in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Gregory fell in that draft due to his perceived issues with marijuana. The fact that he failed his initial drug test at the Combine did not help his case. It seems teams were right to be cautious of Gregory as he violated the league policy on substances of abuse there times and has been suspended twice. But this year he has been reinstated with the emphasis upon getting his life back together.

In the meantime, it seems Gregory is starting to put his football life back together as well. After missing the beginning of camp and the first preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, Gregory started practicing with the Cowboys this week. All the reports out of camp have been positive. Owner Jerry Jones even when so far as to say that Gregory will make the team coming out of camp. He even stated he expects Gregory to contribute in Week 1.

What brings all of this optimism? The optimism comes from the fact that Gregory is starting to focus on his craft as a pass rusher. The results are positive given his play in camp this week. If Gregory can put his life and football life back together, he could move from bust to boom in a hurry.
