Does Bray make a serious run at backup quarterback?

The Chicago Bears signed Chase Daniel to be Mitch Trubisky‘s backup this season. with the reshuffling of the quarterbacks, unknown Tyler Bray ended up as the third-string quarterback. With Daniel’s experience (even as a career backup) and his knowledge of head coach Matt Nagy’s system, it was a foregone conclusion that he’d be the backup.

Someone forgot to tell Bray that information.

So far in the preseason, Bray has outplayed Daniel, and it isn’t even close. Bray is 36-of-61 for 400 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Daniel, on the other hand, is 16-of-28 for 129 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions. In addition, the offense seems to move better with Bray than it has with Daniel at the helm.

While Daniel is the guy who was in the plan, Bray is making the coaches look more closely. Things get more interesting if Bray again outshines Daniel against the Broncos. The coaches already have many decisions to make, and this may add to it.

Bray has a height advantage over Daniel. There aren’t many quarterbacks at 6-0 who do well in the NFL (Drew Brees notwithstanding). Bray is 6-6 so he doesn’t have that problem.

If Bray gives the Bears a better shot at succeeding in case of Trubisky missing time, it is of the utmost importance to give him a fair shot.
