Wide Receivers will be tested

Another thing to watch for this week is the play of the wide receivers. This group has been under the microscope with the departure of Dez Bryant and Jason Witten. Although it was stated that these great players often wanted the ball with the implication that it caused Dak Prescott to falter, this wide receiver group certainly picked up the slack week one against the San Francisco 49ers.

But this week they face a very tough Bengals secondary. The Bengals have been investing in their secondary for the past few years. They are now starting to become an experience group that plays with a lot of fire and physicality.

One thing that will help this group is the Cowboys’ opening up their offense. Last week saw the beginnings of using Tavon Austin as a “weapon” rather than a traditional receiver. It also saw more plays outside of the traditional three tight end sets combined with a zone run scheme. If the Cowboys can further expand this portion of the offense, the wide receivers will benefit greatly.

The young Cowboys receiving group will have their hands full trying to create space. This game will be an excellent test of how far this receiving group has progressed. It will also illuminate exactly how far this group still needs to go.
