2. The defensive depth

While it wasn’t the starters who drew the ire of head coach Vance Joseph, it’s never good when a particular unit gets picked apart. That’s apparently what happened in the Broncos joint practice with the bears on Wednesday as the second-string defense was outplayed.

According to Sayre Bedinger of PredominantlyOrange.com, the reserve defenders struggled pretty badly.

"“Joseph also acknowledged that the Broncos are dealing with some injuries and are down a lot of players, but that didn’t change the fact that he felt his guys should have played better. Veteran backup quarterback Chase Daniel apparently picked apart the Broncos’ backup secondary and it left a bad taste in Joseph’s mouth.” — Bedinger, Predominantly Orange"

Joseph did point to injuries as a cause for some of the struggles, but those injuries are all the more reason to worry if the backups aren’t up to the task. Many of these guys are one snap away from being called upon to play meaningful minutes.

On top of that, the defense as a whole struggled in their Preseason opener, surrendering 42 points to Minnesota. They absolutely have to be better this week, especially given the fact that the Bears haven’t exactly been a powerhouse offense in recent seasons.
