Chase Daniel showed why the head coach wanted him

After the first two preseason games, we pretty much had a quarterback controversy. No, Mitch Trubisky‘s job is safe. The controversy was who would be his backup. The Bears signed Chase  Daniel with the idea of having him back up Trubisky.

The problem started when the third-string quarterback, Tyler Bray, started outplaying Daniel. Daniel had trouble moving the offense in the first two games while Bray moved the ball up and down.

All that changed last week as Daniel took over for Trubisky in the second quarter of their game against the Denver Broncos. Daniel played the rest of the way and engineered a comeback win.

This week against the Chiefs, Daniel got the start and played against the Chiefs’ starting defense. How did he do? Well, he went 15-of-18 for 198 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, he threw zero interceptions. With him at the helm the offense scored 24 points.

Bray played the second half, but it was against the third string and then he was the one having trouble moving the ball. He went 5-of-7 for 72 yards and no touchdowns.

With his play in the last two games, we have a winner in one battle. Daniel will be Trubisky’s backup this season. Will the Bears carry three quarterbacks? Probably not. We probably see the last of Bray when he plays next week.

Daniel had some help looking good. Kevin White, a sure bet to make the team despite how much some fans dislike him for his unfortunate injury run, caught his first touchdown as a professional. It was nice to see him succeed.

Rookie Javon Wims probably won a spot on the team with his play against the Chiefs. He made four catches for 114 yards and one spectacular touchdown. He has good size and athleticism. He showed great body control to make a catch deep in the end zone and keep his toes in bounds. Add that to the good game he had in the Hall of Fame Game and soon he’ll be trying to make those catches in real games.
