3. The offensive line and Darnold will help prevent sacks

The offensive line was a bone of contention during the preseason. However, what the preseason proved was the Jets don’t have good depth on the offensive line, not hat they don’t have good offensive linemen.

Last season, the Jets had one of the worst centers in the NFL. In fact, according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required), he was ranked 42nd against the pass. That means he wasn’t even starter quality. The upgrade at center means an upgrade for the line, because now the other linemen can focus on their jobs rather than having to make up for deficiencies at the center position. That will help the Jets keep Darnold clean.

One of the knocks on Darnold during the pre-draft process was that he has an elongated release. During the preseason, we noticed a big shift in how Darnold releases the football. He had a much quicker release during the preseason.

One of the most important NextGen stats on NFL.com is time to throw. In today’s game it’s crucial to success, and the combination of the offensive line upgrades, and Darnold’s new release should aid in avoiding sacks against the Lions, despite a dominant pass rusher on the other side.
