Seattle Seahawks: 3 Big takeaways from loss vs. Bears in Week 2
By Samuel Teets
The offense won’t be able to carry the team
At halftime, Wilson had just 68 passing yards. The star quarterback was also sacked five times during the first 30 minutes of play. The team also had 35 rushing yards on nine carries — that’s under four yards per carry. It was a poor performance, one that was truly surprising and very telling of how the rest of the year may go.
By the end of the game, Wilson managed to raise his passing total to 226 yards. But a bunch of that came in garbage time at the end of the game, and he threw a pick-six when the team was just starting to get in a groove. The drive after the pick, he was strip-sacked and the Bears recovered, burying any chance the Seahawks had of winning.
The rushing game just barely more than doubled their first half production. The team finished the game with 74 rushing yards. I’ve said the Seahawks need to run the ball more, but they need to do it effectively.
Rookie Rashaad Penny isn’t running the ball effectively. He carried the ball 10 times, but only managed to gain 30 yards. Three yards per carry is way to low for a potential starter. Chris Carson played better, six carries for 24 yards, but neither back is contributing enough to be real threats.
And, of course, there’s the offensive line, which has just been so horrendous that this is the second time I’m bringing it up in this article. But the line needs to be called out. Wilson was sacked six times on Monday and he was strip sacked twice. It’s clear that the pressure is routinely getting to him and there’s no sign of relief.
After the first week there were a few things I thought the team could correct over time and eventually fix before a potential playoff run. After seeing this game I think the Seahawks are looking at a much bigger growing and learning process. This isn’t going to get better in just a couple of weeks. The rest of 2018 is looking bleak for the Seahawks.
