Pass rush struggles again

The Green Bay Packers recorded exactly zero sacks on Alex Smith. That’s absolutely pitiful. Guys that needed to step up and lead the pass rush haven’t done anything. Clay Matthews had a sack, but we all know by now that was taken away. Nick Perry has been quiet, except for a game-sealing sack from the season opener. The entire defensive line sans Kenny Clark has been held in check too.

Mike Pettine needs to get creative with his blitz packages, because whatever he is doing right now is not working at all. The secondary is not helping matters, either. Getting to the quarterback before the corner’s and safety’s get exposed has saved the defense before, and that can be the case again, for now.

The Packers face some struggling offensive lines for the next couple of weeks. Now is a good time for the front seven to dominate in the trenches, get to the quarterback, and gain momentum and confidence as the team heads into one of the toughest portions of the schedule in a couple of weeks.

That includes a Buffalo Bills offensive line that has to protect a rookie quarterback in Josh Allen. It should be a good one for the pass rush, but the Bills were able to stop the Vikings stout defense in its tracks on Sunday in a shocking upset. So, it won’t be as easy as initially thought, but still presents an opportunity for the Packers pass rush to right the ship.
