Round 1: Deebo Samuel, Wide Receiver, South Carolina

While it looks like the Cowboys made a good pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, it can’t be argued that a wide receiver wouldn’t have made just as much sense. They released Dez Bryant in the offseason, and no matter where you stand on that move, no one can deny they failed to adequately replace him.

To be fair, the Cowboys front office believed LVE was the right pick for them due to the draft class. There weren’t as many elite linebacker prospects as there were wide receivers. Therefore, the idea had to be that they could get another good receiver later, but Round 1 was where they had to make a play for a playmaker in the middle of their defense.

All that being said, they now go back out and get themselves the best wideout on their board. There are some elite prospects like D.K. Metcalf and A.J. Brown out of Ole Miss, as well as N’Keal Harry from Arizona State. All three are off the board in this mock, so we get Deebo Samuel out of South Carolina.

While he isn’t the prototypical No. 1 receiver, he is as explosive as they come. Samuel can stretch the field and Tavon Austin has been showing how much just one player like that can help an offense.

With there being quarterback and health issues in his career, Samuel hasn’t shown his full potential just yet but is an intriguing prospect who can help in a myriad of ways. He’s made plays throwing, running, and receiving but most of his noise has been made as a return man, which is another area he can help the Cowboys.
