New Orleans Saints: Drew Brees cements place in history
With another record broken and the New Orleans Saints on the upswing, Drew Brees has proven he’s one of the greatest in NFL history.
GOAT: Originally a word only used for animals, it’s taken on an entirely new meaning in the sports world. Known as the Greatest of All Time, everyone is always using it to describe some or one of their favorite players. For the NFL, most people use it to describe Tom Brady in regards to quarterbacks. One name that always gets left out of the conversation is Drew Brees, quarterback of the New Orleans Saints.
However, Brees has proven himself among the greats, a future Hall-of-Famer and a certified elite player. Many classify Brady as the GOAT due to the number of Super Bowl rings he has, but Brees has been so much more to the NFL and New Orleans in general.
His impact on the NFL has been immeasurable. Originally starting his career in San Diego, Brees had a decent couple of years until he was injured. The Chargers let him go and the Saints snatched him up. The rest is essentially history as Brees has been dominating the NFL ever since.

An argument could be made for multiple years being the best of his career. 2009, the year Brees helped lead his team to the Super Bowl and became the face of New Orleans, has to be included. He was also named the MVP of Super Bowl XLIV, so 2009 was a great year for Brees. I’d be remiss to not also mention his 2014 and 2017 seasons, too.
His newest achievement on the field came on Monday Night Football in Week 5 of the 2018 season. Brees broke Peyton Manning’s all-time career passing yardage record. He capped off the night by helping the Saints win the game and remained perfect with no interceptions. Despite the rocky start to 2018, Brees looks on his way to another MVP-caliber season.
Despite his achievements on the field, Brees is known for his contributions to New Orleans. In 2006, he was signed by the Saints, one year after the city of New Orleans was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. It destroyed the city, its citizens and people’s hope, but Brees was able to provide guiding light in those times.
He rolled up his sleeves and began working to help his new community. The impact he had was enormous. He helped as much as he could in trying to bring the city back to its former glory. Most notably, Brees worked to help better the lives of children affected by Katrina.
Brees gave the ultimate gift back to the city in 2009. He helped lead the Saints to a Super Bowl win, the first for the franchise. It was the perfect way to bring hope back to a city that lost so much. If anything, it was a great distraction for those who were affected and gave them something to be happy about.
His contributions didn’t end there, though. Since then, Brees has created his own charity and worked with many different organizations to help New Orleans. He’s also synonymously become one of the most respected quarterbacks. While Brees might not have as many Super Bowl rings as Tom Brady, he is the GOAT for the people of New Orleans — and that’s really all that matters.
