Kevin Toliver needs to continue to play well in place of injured starters

The Chicago Bears defense has been without Marcus Cooper for two games, and Prince Amukamara missed the last one, both due to hamstring injuries. A player who came in and played well is Kevin Toliver.

The Bears activated Toliver before the Seattle Seahawks game in Week 2. He didn’t play until Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals. In that game, he recorded three tackles.

The Bears needed Toliver to start against the Bucs. His coverage was nice and tight, and he recorded seven tackles.

We’re still not sure if either or both cornerbacks come back this week. Even with their return, Toliver earned more playing time. He’s played well and looks like he belongs on the field. He always had the ability, but immaturity and inconsistencies kept him from reaching his potential. It appears as if he’s getting over that, and the Bears are the better for it.

If Toliver and the rest of the secondary can continue to play tight defense, it bodes well for the pass rushers. If Tannehill cannot find an open man quickly, that vaunted Bears pass rusher will make life very difficult for him.

Toliver has done well in a starting role. Once the injured corners come back, he adds to the Bears depth, making the defense that much better.
