3. Michael Gallup

Rookie wide receiver Michael Gallup did what he could for the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, finishing the day with three receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown. Gallup was targeted five times by quarterback Dak Prescott, the third most of any Cowboys wide receiver.

Gallup was one the best players on the Cowboys offense in the three-point loss to the Washington Redskins, and this was his most productive game of his early career. His performance included a 49-yard touchdown reception, being his first touchdown of his NFL career.

The past two games Gallup is averaging 27 yards per reception, and granted in Week 6 against the Jacksonville Jaguars he had just one reception for 27 yards, he’s still put up the average. The Week 7 game was also the second time this season Gallup has caught multiple passes in a game, with the first occurrence happening back in Week 4 where he had two receptions for 45 yards against the Detroit Lions.

Seeing Gallup make the big-time play he made when he caught the touchdown pass shows that he has the abilities to become a very solid wide receiver for the Cowboys, but he’s going to have to make more than just one reception per game — as he has in five of the seven games played — to make a mark with this team.

Gallup stepped up nicely on a struggling offense, but not the Cowboys need to see the rookie take the next step in his progression as the season rolls along.
