3. Wendell Smallwood

Eagles running back Wendell Smallwood has taken over the primary running duties since Jay Ajayi suffered his season ending ACL injury against the Vikings in Week 5. Smallwood, along with the rest of the Eagles running backs, haven’t been able to fill the void left by Ajayi though.

Against the Giants, Smallwood only averaged 2.8 yards on 18 carries. He didn’t fare much better against the Panthers in Week 7. Smallwood had only nine carries for 32 yards and two receptions for five yards. The Eagles as a team only had 58 yards on the ground against the Panthers.

The running woes have been one of the biggest issues for the Eagles offense. Last week, they ran the ball only 24 times in a game where they were in control. It shows that head coach Doug Pederson may have lost faith in Smallwood and his backfield mate Corey Clement.

This week, the Eagles face a Jaguars defense that has struggled thus far this season. They average giving up 121 yards per game on the ground to opposing teams. Smallwood is going to need to capitalize on the Jaguars weakness and make some plays.

If Smallwood can’t get going on the ground it could be another long day for the Eagles offense. If he can find a way to make some plays that will open up the Eagles offense and make everyone’s job easier. Smallwood needs to step up big time in this game for the Eagles to be successful.
